METALLICA's 'Monster' Earns $45,000 In Opening Weekend
July 11, 2004"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster", which follows the heavy metal band through the creation of their latest album, "St. Anger", and group therapy, had the highest per-screen average of the two documentaries that opened in limited release this weekend. The IFC Films release, which is unrated, earned $15,000 at each of the three sites it played for a total of $45,000.
In an interview with the U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, one of the documentary's filmmakers, Joe Berlinger, spoke about the inclusion of a scene in the movie in which METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich sits down with former METALLICA guitarist Dave Mustaine for a one-on-one therapy session.
"My experience with Dave was that he was a real gentleman," said Berlinger. "I know that when he showed up he was a little surprised to see the cameras, but I explained to him what we were doing, and he signed a release form giving us permission to use the footage. The whole meeting between him and Lars lasted about two or three hours, and we turned off the cameras three times, at his request, when things got a little too emotional. We tried to be respectful of his feelings."
Added METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett: "The guys in the band are aware that Dave isn't happy with that scene. But he said what he wanted to say, and nobody put any words in his mouth. And if he feels now that he didn't present himself in the proper way, is that really our fault?"
